Freedom Food is now working closely with Sustain, the alliance for better food and farming, whose Good Food on the Public Plate project aims to encourage public sector bodies in London to buy and use more sustainable food. Amongst a range of initiatives, the project seeks to encourage public sector bodies to use “better quality animal products reared to higher welfare standards”.

Working with Sustain, Freedom Food organised a visit for members of the pan London Cluster of large public sector institutions to 2 Sisters Willand to view various types of chicken production – standard, Freedom Food indoor and free-range. This was followed by a discussion concerning ways in which the public sector bodies could consider changing their current chicken buying practices, including collaborative buying power, to achieve cost-savings that might allow them to upgrade to Freedom Food indoor reared birds.
“The group who attended have informally committed to a trial in the New Year” said Leigh Grant, Freedom Food’s chief executive. “We very much hope that the trial will be successful as we believe it could assist in opening the doors to public sector bodies throughout the UK for our producers”. |
